An IPTV DVR lets you record live TV channels just like a cable DVR — but without the rental fee, with far more storage, and accessible from any device in your home. From a simple USB drive plugged into your Firestick to a full network-attached storage server that any TV can access, here's how to build it.

IPTV DVR Options: From Simple to Advanced

Basic

USB Drive + TiviMate

$15–$30 (USB drive)

Plug a USB drive into your streaming device. TiviMate records directly to the drive. Access recordings on that device only. Perfect for single-room use.

Pros

  • +Easiest setup
  • +Very low cost
  • +No extra equipment

Cons

  • Recordings only on one device
  • Limited by USB drive size
Intermediate

External HDD + Android TV Box

$50–$100 (HDD + box)

Connect a USB external hard drive to an Android TV box with a USB port. TiviMate records to the HDD. More storage than USB drives and you can manually move files.

Pros

  • +More storage (1–4TB)
  • +Better write speeds
  • +Can move files to PC

Cons

  • Still single-device access
  • Requires box with USB port
Advanced

NAS + Plex/Emby DVR

$200–$500 (NAS)

A Network Attached Storage device on your home network acts as a central server. Use Plex with IPTV integration to record to the NAS. Any device on your network can play recordings.

Pros

  • +Whole-home access
  • +Terabytes of storage
  • +Watch recordings anywhere

Cons

  • More expensive setup
  • Technical configuration needed
Pro

Home Server (Raspberry Pi/PC)

$100–$300

Run Tvheadend, Emby, or Plex on a Raspberry Pi 4 or old PC to create a full DVR server. Acts as a whole-home recording backend for all your IPTV streams.

Pros

  • +Maximum flexibility
  • +Full control
  • +Lowest ongoing cost

Cons

  • Most technical setup
  • Always-on device needed

Setup: Basic IPTV DVR with TiviMate + USB Drive

The easiest way to start recording IPTV. Works on any Android TV box or Fire TV Cube.

1

Get the right storage

Buy a USB 3.0 flash drive (128GB+) or USB SSD. Avoid cheap drives — IPTV recording writes continuously and cheap drives fail quickly. Recommended: Samsung FIT+ 128GB or SanDisk Ultra Fit.

2

Connect USB to your device

Plug the USB drive into your device's USB port. For standard Firestick, you need a USB OTG cable since it only has a micro-USB power port. Fire TV Cube has a built-in USB-A port.

3

Format the drive

When prompted, format the drive for use with your device. This erases existing content. USB drives formatted as exFAT work best for large recording files.

4

Set recording path in TiviMate

Open TiviMate → Settings → General → Recording path. Select your USB drive. Tap Save.

5

Test a recording

Start watching any channel, press Menu → Record. Check that a red recording indicator appears. Let it run for 1 minute then stop and find the file under Recordings.

6

Schedule recordings from EPG

In the TV Guide, long-press any future program and select Record. TiviMate will start recording automatically when the program begins.

Setup: Whole-Home IPTV DVR with NAS

This setup lets you record IPTV to a central NAS (Network Attached Storage) and watch recordings on any TV, phone, or tablet in your home.

What you need

  • NAS device (Synology DS223, QNAP TS-233, or similar)
  • 2TB+ hard drives for the NAS
  • Plex Media Server (free) installed on the NAS
  • Plex app on all TVs and devices
  • Your IPTV M3U URL
1

Set up your NAS device and install hard drives following the manufacturer's guide.

2

Install Plex Media Server on the NAS (available in most NAS app stores).

3

In Plex, go to Settings → Live TV & DVR → Set Up Plex DVR.

4

Add your IPTV M3U URL as a Plex DVR source.

5

Map channels to Plex's EPG guide data.

6

Install Plex on all TVs (via Firestick, Roku, Smart TV, etc.).

7

Schedule recordings from Plex's TV Guide — they save to your NAS.

8

Watch recordings from any Plex-enabled device on your network.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an IPTV DVR?

An IPTV DVR lets you record live IPTV channels to a storage device — USB drive, external HDD, or NAS. Unlike cable DVRs, there's no monthly rental fee and you can store as much as your drive allows.

Can I watch IPTV recordings on any TV?

Yes, with a whole-home DVR setup using Plex, Emby, or Jellyfin with a NAS. Recordings are stored centrally and accessible from any TV, phone, or tablet on your home network.

Does TiviMate have a DVR?

Yes. TiviMate Premium includes built-in DVR recording to USB storage. You can record live channels, schedule recordings from the EPG, and maintain a recordings library within TiviMate.

How much storage do I need for IPTV DVR?

HD IPTV recordings use about 2GB per hour. A 128GB USB drive holds ~64 hours. For regular recording, use a 1TB external HDD. For a whole-home setup, a 2–4TB NAS covers most families.
